It is constantly being brought to the public attention
that stress related illness is exacting a high cost in Britain (£3.7
Billion according to a recent HSE report [June 2006]) - with the
cost to business alone reported to be in the region of £530 million
(from HSE statistics Nov. 2007). Then there is the immeasurable
cost to the individual in terms of health, work and self-esteem.
435 000 individuals believed in 2009/10 that they were experiencing
work-related stress that was directly affecting their health (2009/10
survey of Self-reported Work-related Illness –SW!T3W12) whilst 13.6%
of all working individuals thought their job very or extremely stressful
(2007 Psychosocial Working Conditions survey. The CBI put the cost
of stress related illness at 10% of Britain's Gross National product,
with 45 million working days lost due to general stress. This information
comes from "Stress and Mental health in the Workplace" report which
was commissioned for MIND (www.mind.org.uk)
for Mental Health Week in 2005.
Further figures (e.g. for 2011/12 40% of work related illnesses were attributed to stress) on adverse effects of stress can be found on the
Health and Safety Executive’s web site (www.hse.gov.uk)
amongst others. But there are ways of tackling stress.

Investment in recognising and controlling the causes of stress before it controls the workforce will save your business substantial costs in the long term.
Here are just some of the causes for stress in a business:
- Are large numbers of staff taking time off for minor illnesses?
- Are staff having to work longer & longer hours?
- Is there constant change in the work environment?
- Do staff have to travel a lot on a regular basis?
- Are staff expected to be available at all sorts of unsociable
hours?
- Are there tight deadlines constantly to be met? etc …..
